The Playhouse
The Playhouse has an emerging practice in relation to sustainable theatrical production encouraging the use of second hand props, costumes and materials and the reuse, repurposing and repair of sets. At the heart of this practice is a circular economy approach, which encourages the use and development of local resources, co-production and the pooling of resources locally, nationally and internationally for mutual benefit.
In addition it is aiming to embark on an ambitious EnerPhit retrofit of its listed building to reach its potential as a passive building.
The Playhouse is also taking the lead on one of the most significant climate focussed arts project on this island working in partnership with Zero Waste North West, Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland Resources Network and Derry City and Strabane District Council.
Artitude: Climate, Culture and Circularity is a place-based collaborative movement enabling community-led transformation in our relationship with nature, waste, circular economy and climate action.
It recognises our raw humanity as part of nature and who we are as people, whilst being inspired by our need for healthier, happier, more sustainable lives and localities.
We:
- Reconnect through story telling to our deeper motivations of belonging and the natural world: enabling long-term, sustainable behaviour and attitudinal change leading to broader societal transformation.
- Work together in depth across diverse ecosystems of people in a locality through common cause and creativity.
- Enable a local movement with inclusion at its heart, making connections to national and international movements to build greater impact.
Activities include:
- Artitude Residencies led by communities throughout the Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) area.
- Festival programming- local-led and climate-inspired
- Learning and Dissemination- Public Media and Discourse Portfolio, championing community voices
- Research and Evaluation- Listening and Learning from people in communities
- Partnership Development - New Modes of Governance
