BEAT CARNIVAL
Beat Carnival is a full-time, producing, Carnival Arts organisation, established in 1993. We create carnival arts, organise and produce performances, train and develop artists and encourage community participation and ambition.
We operate from Beat Carnival Centre where we deliver many hundreds of free workshops and training programmes with thousands of individuals each year. Activities range from drumming to costume design, dance to puppetry, neighbourhood celebrations to large-scale outdoor events. In this way, we help develop creative skills, for all abilities and ages. We are committed to supporting artists and improving quality of life in our communities and the carnival sector as a whole.
Building on the steps we have taken in recent years to evaluate our environmental impact, our focus in the short term is to continue to monitor and record our energy use and waste production to build a better picture of our carbon footprint and environmental impact. This will allow the implementation of positive change in the medium and long term.
We currently monitor our fossil fuel consumption, electricity usage, staff commute and company vehicle mileage. We are developing a process for recording programme / event related participant travel, discussing its environmental impact and ways to help reduce it.
Through this monitoring process we have identified areas where the biggest impact can be made to reduce our carbon footprint. We are now evaluating the best methods to achieve this change, namely more efficient heating solutions coupled with a solar panel installation.
64% of our electricity is already supplied from renewable sources.
We are diligent at reusing and repurposing many items of props, costume and packaging materials, while also developing a process to reclaim raw materials from obsolete items.
We are building positive environmental thinking, processes and messages into projects being planned and delivered with communities.
We are investing time and resources into the progression of ‘Green carnival arts’ and are contributing to a network of organisational practices in development across the UK and Ireland.
We understand this will be an involved and ongoing process, as we refine our working processes to become an environmentally conscious and sustainable arts company.
